Care Following Graft Surgery

  1. DO NOT disturb surgery in any way for 48 hours.
  2. DO NOT brush area for 2 weeks.
  3. RESTRICT lip movement as much as possible.

PAIN

Slight discomfort following surgery is to be expected. For first 4 days take 600 mg ibuprofen every 5 hours. If the medication you have seems inadequate, contact our office.

SWELLING

For first 12 hours, apply ice pack [cold compress] to affected side of face, alternating on 10 minutes, off 10 minutes. DO NOT APPLY HEAT.

DISCOLORATION

Tissue in graft area may turn slightly grey. This will disappear without treatment.

MOUTH CARE

Do not rinse mouth for 48 hours following surgery. After 48 hours, gently dab teeth in surgery area with chlorhexidine rinse. Avoid touching gum for 5 days.

DIET

Adequate nutrition is important for proper healing. Eat soft nutritious foods such as: eggs, chopped meats, custards, milk shakes, soups, and juices. Avoid HOT foods and HOT liquids.

COMPLICATIONS

Even with proper care, complications sometimes arise following oral surgery. In case of unusual disturbances, do not hesitate to contact our office.

SUTURES

Some sutures are dissolvable and will dissolve in 5 days, others to be removed in 2 weeks.

POST OP FOLLOW-UP

Post op follow-up in one week, followed by one week after.
